Ellijay is surrounded by many award-winning wineries. Winter is the perfect time to enjoy beautiful mountain views from inside a cozy tasting room while sipping great wine.

One of the most popular wineries nearby is Cartecay Vineyards. This local winery is known for its beautiful ambiance, incredible views, and, of course, delicious wine. They offer live music each weekend, making it a fun and festive spot to bring the whole group.

2. Hit the Hiking Trails

The North Georgia region is home to the Blue Ridge Mountains, multiple state parks, and the Southern portion of the Appalachian Trail, to name a few.

This terrain lends itself to scenic drives, waterfall hikes, mountain biking, and a slew of other outdoor adventures. Perhaps the most popular outdoor activity during the winter is to hit the many hiking trails nearby. The winter landscape allows you to see far and wide no matter which trail you take.

Our Ellijay mountain homes are closest to the Aska Trail System, a collection of hiking trails off of Aska Road that vary in length and difficulty. Hikes range from 1 mile to 10 miles, with access to mountain views, streams and rivers, and Lake Blue Ridge.

If you want to hike the Appalachian Trail, start at Springer Mountain, the beginning of the AT. From there, you can head to Amicaloca Falls to see the tallest waterfall in Georgia.

3. Ride the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway in Downtown Blue Ridge is a popular activity for the whole family to enjoy. This scenic train ride takes you through the Blue Ridge mountains, offering snacks and entertainment along the way.

During the holiday season, the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway offers a special ride called the Holiday Express. Instead of the typical 4-hour train ride, the Holiday Express is a one-hour ride. Riders get the chance to sing Christmas songs together, hear Christmas stories, and even meet Santa and Mrs. Claus. Hot cocoa and holiday snacks are available for purchase.

Whether you choose to take the standard ride or the Holiday Express, you are in for a treat. Prices vary based on what ride you decide.

4. Experience Downtown Ellijay

Downtown Ellijay is charming year-round, but it is especially picturesque during the holiday season.

The historic square is known for its local restaurants, mom-and-pop shops, museums, and theaters. During the holiday season, the shops are full of Christmas decorations and one-of-a-kind gifts for your loved ones. Twinkling Christmas lights line the streets. And a giant Christmas tree graces the center of the Downtown square, giving your stroll a festive backdrop.

We recommend grabbing a warm cup of hot cocoa and window shopping down the square, popping into local favorites like Artful Ellijay. Head to local restaurants such as Ellijay Wood-Fired Pizza and Cantaberry Restaurant when you get hungry.

Finally, Tabor House Museum, operated by the Gilmer County Historical Society, is the perfect spot for paying homage to Civil War history.
